Tables

Tables can be used to set out large amounts of tabular information for easy retrieval. This is one typical way of laying out a table—many different layouts are possible.

Tables can be numbered or left unnumbered, depending on how many you use. Always give them a title.

If...Then... Tables

If...Then... tables are often used in computer user documentation.

Troubleshooting tables are a special type of table used to help the reader quickly identify and solve common problems. They are often used in equipment operations manuals, such as printer manuals.

Here are some tips on setting up tables:

  • Minimize the number and thickness of lines in the table. Use just enough to keep related information together.

  • Avoid mixing different types of information.

  • Avoid tables that are larger than one page.

  • Don’t allow tables to break across two pages.
